Our Experience
Here’s a snapshot of some of Joshua Perin’s accomplishments before founding Sound & Sense Communications.
building a communications function from the ground up
When Joshua joined WasteZero, the innovative early-stage sustainability company had a great product but no communications capabilities—so he built, implemented, and managed a content strategy that maximized the power of their story and spread the word about the organization’s nationwide impact.
The strategy led to a dramatic increase in awareness of WasteZero, with a twenty-fold increase in social media audience; prominent articles about the company in outlets like the Los Angeles Times, The Atlantic, and NPR; and a steady thought leadership presence in the conferences, events, and publications where WasteZero’s buyers could be found.
These efforts built awareness of the company and helped it grow to more than $500,000 a year in new accounts and more than $2 million a year in renewals within Joshua’s first year there.
developing an internal content strategy for a management consulting firm
The global life sciences consultancy Campbell Alliance needed to standardize its process for managing the flow of client-facing content so that it could decrease inefficiencies, share once-siloed information, and limit the potential leakage of proprietary data.
Serving as a “consultant to the consultants,” Joshua built and implemented a strategy that managed the path of Campbell Alliance’s intellectual property through the project lifecycle, from research through development and editing, and finally knowledge capture and template development.
With the strategy in place, Campbell Alliance was able to deliver projects more efficiently and at a higher level of quality—a key element that helped the company successfully be sold to a global, $2 billion pharma/biotech services company a few years later.
Rebuilding a communications department to match a new business model
Curi was a medical malpractice insurance carrier operating in three states when Joshua came on board—and it had the more narrowly focused Communications function to match. But as the company added business lines and built a nationwide footprint, it needed a more dynamic, outward-facing, growth-oriented approach to communications.
Joshua designed a new multichannel communications strategy for Curi, built robust media relations and social media programs that positioned Curi as an innovative thought leader, and helped lead a rebranding process that modernized the firm’s reputation and better matched its new business model.
This work was a key factor in Curi’s revenue growth from $32 million to $101 million while Joshua was leading its Communications function.
coaching teams and individuals to maximize the power of their content
Spanning his time in business and academia, Joshua’s career has been marked by a dedication to coaching others to communicate with power and precision.
He has been a valuable communications advisor and strategist for multiple CEOs and other C-level executives, has taught business writing courses to staff at Curi and The Advisory Board Company, and served as both a classroom instructor and a trainer of new teachers at Yale University.
Joshua twice earned the “Superstar Coach Award” at Campbell Alliance for his accomplishments as a mentor to his staff and others in the company, and he received the university-wide Prize Teaching Fellowship at Yale for excellence in undergraduate instruction. Individuals Joshua has coached and mentored have gone on to prominent roles in organizations such as Meta, the Washington Post, Google Health, and Bain & Company.
